Experimenting with Colour

Task: "Using the geometrical shapes in the net I utilised for the final version of my continued 3D staircase in my experimenting with form task, I wanted to develop a 2D piece. In this piece I wanted to create a 3D illusion, and for that I needed to make sure to choose the right colours. I knew that to make a particular shapes stand out I should use contrasting colours and for the shapes that I wanted to pair up as a unit I should use complementary colours.Having studied the colour wheel, I chose to work with different values of blue and different values orange. In order to make the whole piece a unit, I added white to all the shades. From my four experiments, I decided on the final one as the most 3D looking."

Process:

Final Work:
Staircase Net Pattern. Acrylic Paint on Canvas.

Experimenting with Form

Task: "Develop a net in order to make a 3D form out of a 2D shape."

Background Information:
I derived this work from this picture I took of a brutalist staircase in Hayward Gallery in my photography task.

Process:
After some experimentation, I have come up with this net, which, after cutting it and assembling it together with some tape, gave me this result…

IMG_0657.JPG
To develop this form even further, I have come up with an advanced version of the initial net...
This was an unexpected result, however it could be useful as a support structure for a building where there are many of them separating two floors...

Still not having achieved my initial plan for my model to look like a miniature version of the brutalist staircase, I created a different net. Instead of repeating my base shape horizontally like I did before, this time I tried repeating it vertically...
The result ended up being exactly what I intended, a continued version of the staircase...

Final Work:

Essay

MSA is the right university for me as it’s architecture course involves the focus of humanities within architecture and the introduction into urbanism. I visited MSA a few months ago and found the architecture building very modern. I found it to be well equipped with the latest tools and machinery needed for this study, something I always consider and look for when trying to choose the right university for me. I could picture myself living the student life in the city. I loved how it was mostly populated by students who only had positive comments about their lives there, not only in the university, but also when they are not studying. Most importantly, when I visited the university I felt very welcomed by the students and faculty there. I found the location of the university and the distance from the building to the accommodations to be very comfortable, as well as quick and easy to get to.

I know I would love the humanities course work because of my interest in the way buildings can reflect culture and history. This is a passion I developed when I visited the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. The design used in the palace successfully represents the Muslim community that once lived there, through its geometrical shapes in the walls and the way the arches are cut. Being a very structural person myself, I am amazed by the use of patterns and symmetry in buildings, which is why Alhambra Palace did not fail to impress me in through its repetitive decorative designs.

I am fascinated by urban design and the possibility of reconstructing old buildings into a better version of themselves. This is why my favourite architect is Christopher Wren. As the person who design St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s most iconic structures, my interest in him surged after the extensive research I did about him for my extended essay. I wrote about the relationship between modern and old iconic buildings in London. I admire his innovative thinking and his ability to redesign London City after The Great Fire of 1666. I love Wren’s Baroque style, as I have always payed close attention to the use of detail in buildings. The Studio course in this study attracts me as it will introduce me to urbanism and enable me to develop critical approaches on cities.

One day, I would love to experience the Great Wall of China. As I previously stated, I love it when buildings are used as mediums of culture representation. I think the Great Wall of China is a very important structure that speaks for itself. I believe this iconic structure states the power and authority of the country.

Experimenting in 2D

Task: "Experiment with two different media: Chalk and Ink"

Background Information:
I derived this work from this picture I took of St. Paul's Cathedral in my photography task.

Process:
IMG_1009.JPG ⇨ IMG_1031 2.JPG ⇨ IMG_1067.JPG

Technique:
1)Using a projector, I outlined the picture of the building onto the paper using black chalk.
2)I then filled in the remaining details with white chalk.
3)Finally, to highlight the form and characteristics of Baroque buildings,I outlined the main lines with ink, letting some of it drop down in order to create a theatrical effect.

1 Final Work:

Facade of St. Paul's Cathedral. Using chalk and ink on brown paper.

Personal Comment: "The dropping ink transforms my image and adds a dramatic effect. It was used to symbolize two things: the iconic rainy weather of London and the effects of time. This piece of work represents the way old architecture is crumbling, but it is still standing."

Photography

Task: "Took pictures of Baroque and Brutalist architecture in order to inform myself and become familiar with their characteristics. This trip to London gave me inspiration on my exhibition work."
